A current state map is created using icons and data that help a cross-functional mapping team create ‘eyes for flow’ and ‘eyes for waste’. A future state map is then created by the team using a set of questions that embody the key concepts of lean: value, flow, pull, leveling, and more. A future state is designed to meet specific measurable objectives that had previously been identified. The team will not just change the way work currently flows and is performed, but how the value stream will be managed going forward. Once a vision is agreed upon, the team then develops a plan to make the future state a reality. A plan is developed to guide the team to Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) its way to the future state over a 6-to-12-month period.
This workshop will introduce the Value Stream Mapping methodology using a forging related case study. Next, participants will develop value stream maps for their own organizations. Participants will be asked to complete pre-work prior to the workshop to maximize the benefits of this activity. Finally, a review of the time-tested Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) improvement process and the various methodologies based on PDCA will be provided. The real challenge isn’t mapping, it’s making the envisioned future state a reality.
So, bring several colleagues with you and together begin your organization’s Lean journey using the powerful Value Stream Mapping approach.
